  • The area of Bosnia would become part of the Byzantine Empire. The area of Herzegovina came to being in 1448, joining Bosnia later that century under Turkish rule.

  • The history of Bosnia is a mosaic of diverse cultures, empires, and historical turning points. Located at the crossroads of Europe, the region has been inhabited since ancient times, witnessing the influence of Illyrians, Celts, and Romans. In the medieval period, Bosnia emerged as an independent kingdom, with Ban Kulin's reign in the 12th century symbolizing a period of cultural and economic flourishing. However, in 1463, Bosnia fell under Ottoman rule, shaping the region's identity for centuries. The Ottoman era left a lasting impact on Bosnian society, with a legacy seen in the architecture, language, and traditions. The Austro-Hungarian Empire later took control in 1878, marking another chapter in Bosnia's complex history.

  • The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 triggered World War I, leading to Bosnia becoming part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). In the 1990s, the breakup of Yugoslavia resulted in the Bosnian War, a tragic conflict that left an indelible mark on the nation. Since the signing of the Dayton Agreement in 1995, Bosnia and Herzegovina have been on a path of post-war recovery, working towards unity and reconciliation. The history of Bosnia encapsulates resilience, cultural diversity, and the pursuit of peace in the face of historical complexities.
