Between 1922 and 1991, Ukraine was recognized as the unofficial designation of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union. During the period of 1941-1944, the region was annexed by Germany and referred to as Reichskommissariat Ukraine. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine declared its independence and adopted a neutral stance. In 1996, a new constitution was ratified. In 2014, a revolution ensued, culminating in a series of mass demonstrations known as the Euromaidan, which led to the establishment of a new government.
